Can the CDCP Help Me Cover My Next Dental Appointment?

Summary

If you’re newly approved for the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP), you might be wondering: Does it actually cover my next visit? At Glenmore Park Dental in SW Calgary, we help patients understand what’s included, what might require a co-pay, and how to make the most of their CDCP benefits. From cleanings and exams to fillings and dentures, the CDCP covers many essential services, but it’s not always 100%. In this blog, we explain how to know what’s covered before you book. Contact Glenmore Park Dental today for help understanding your CDCP benefits and planning a visit that works for your needs, your health, and your budget.

CDCP Coverage Still Confusing? You’re Not Alone.

Since the Canadian Dental Care Plan launched, many patients have come to us with the same question: “Will CDCP cover my next appointment?”

It’s a fair question. Coverage levels depend on eligibility, income brackets, and which services you need. And because the rollout has been gradual, many people aren’t sure what to expect when they show up at the clinic.

At Glenmore Park Dental, we’ve been helping CDCP patients in Calgary understand their coverage so they can get the care they need, without the stress. Whether you're coming in for a cleaning or dealing with something more urgent, we’re here to make it simple and transparent.

What the CDCP Covers — and How It Works at Our Clinic

What’s Typically Covered?

  • The CDCP helps eligible Canadians cover many essential dental services, including:
  • Dental exams and cleanings
  • X-rays
  • Fluoride treatments
  • Fillings
  • Extractions
  • Root canal therapy (in certain cases)
  • Partial and full dentures

These services are considered preventive or basic dental care and are fully or partially covered depending on your income.

What About Cosmetic or Specialized Services?

The CDCP does not cover:

  • Teeth whitening
  • Cosmetic veneers or Bioclear
  • Orthodontics (like Invisalign®)
  • Most crowns, bridges, and implants

If you’re coming in for something like a smile makeover or cosmetic fix, the CDCP won’t apply, but we can still provide estimates and financing options for out-of-pocket care.

What Will I Need to Pay?

Even if your service is covered, you may still have a co-payment depending on your household income:

Household Income and Co-Payment

Under $70,000 → 0%

$70,000–$79,999 → 40%

$80,000–$89,999 → 60%

Example: If your dental exam is $200 and your income is $75,000, you’ll pay 40% — or $80 out of pocket.

We’ll always give you a clear estimate before your appointment so you can make informed choices.

Already Have Other Insurance? Here's What to Know

If you have a private or group dental plan, you may not qualify for the CDCP. However, if your existing coverage is limited, we can help check if CDCP can be used as secondary coverage in some cases.

Our team will walk you through this during your intake process.
