How the CDCP Works with Existing Insurance in Calgary

Summary

Many patients in Calgary are wondering: Can I still use the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) if I have other dental insurance? The answer isn’t always clear — and it depends on the type of coverage you already have. At Glenmore Park Dental, we help patients across Lakeview, Marda Loop, Glenbrook, Acadia, and Glamorgan understand how the CDCP interacts with private or group plans. In this blog, we explain who qualifies, what happens if you already have insurance, and how to find out if you're eligible for CDCP benefits. Contact Glenmore Park Dental today for help navigating your coverage and booking your next affordable dental visit in SW Calgary.

Already Have Dental Coverage? Here’s What You Need to Know

The launch of the Canadian Dental Care Plan (CDCP) has been a huge step toward improving access to dental care across Canada, especially for those who couldn’t afford it before. But one of the most common questions we hear at Glenmore Park Dental is:

“Can I still use the CDCP if I already have dental insurance?”

The short answer: If you have any private or group dental coverage, you likely don’t qualify for the CDCP, at least not right now.

That includes coverage from:

  • Employer benefits
  • Union or professional associations
  • Spousal or family group plans
  • Any individual or private dental plan

Even if you don’t use that insurance regularly, just having it typically disqualifies you from CDCP access.

Understanding Eligibility and Overlap

What the CDCP Is Designed For

The CDCP is meant to support Canadians without any private dental insurance. That includes:

  • Seniors
  • Low- to middle-income individuals and families
  • Children and youth in uncovered households
  • People with no employer or group health plan

You can still qualify if you previously had insurance that’s now expired or if your employer-provided coverage has ended.

What About Limited or Basic Insurance Plans?

Even if your existing plan is very limited, for example, it doesn’t cover cleanings or only offers partial coverage; it still makes you ineligible for the CDCP at this time.

Some patients assume that because they pay out-of-pocket for many services, they should qualify, but CDCP eligibility is currently all or nothing when it comes to having other insurance.

The government may expand CDCP access or introduce secondary coverage options in the future, but for now, any active private dental insurance prevents enrollment.

Unsure About Your Status? We Can Help

If you're not sure whether you're eligible or if your existing coverage has changed recently, the Glenmore Park Dental team can help you:

  • Verify your eligibility with the CDCP
  • Understand what your current plan covers
  • Estimate your out-of-pocket costs
  • Plan treatments accordingly

We regularly help patients in Lakeview, Glenbrook, Marda Loop, Acadia, and Glamorgan navigate insurance and funding questions to make dental care as accessible as possible.

Your CDCP Questions Answered By Glenmore Park Dental

No. If you have private, employer, or group dental coverage, you’re currently not eligible for the CDCP.

Even if you don’t use it, having active dental insurance still disqualifies you from CDCP coverage.

Unfortunately, any amount of private coverage, even limited, makes you ineligible at this time. Need more information? Contact Glenmore Park Dental today.
